The Trust First Principle and the Universal Basic Income
Trust thought for today - an angle on the 'trust first' principle and the Universal Basic Income. I am looking for ways that 'trust first' is shown to work in practice. Do send others if you see them!
Here is a useful update article from The Big Issue on the UBI in the UK where Scotland and Wales will be trialling the system soon. Some UK towns are going to trial their own too. Hurray!
What is the UBI and which countries are eyeing a trial?
Detractors of the concept focus on that it will make people too lazy to work and if given it, we will all doss about boozing and watching Netflix. They basically don't trust people to run their own lives.
Trials have shown this to be wrong that it is empowering and also research shows overall cost savings to councils where it is applied. Though as Big Issue says there are concerns about application and how it will be targeted, but these re 'technical' not personal.
Here is a 2019 article from Guardian with some interesting stats.
"Free money wouldn’t make people lazy – but it could revolutionise work".
A UBI is basically the Trust First Principle in action. People can be trusted if they are empowered and enabled to help themselves.
(PS: There isn't a Trust First Principle I don't think, I just made it up, but there should be one, so let's start one! )
