The Value of Inclusion of Citizens and Other Stakeholders in Decision-Making

Trust thought for today - reminded of the value of inclusion of citizens and other stakeholders in decision-making.

Note the word 'influenced' in the quote! Not just consulted, held a dialogue meeting or a focus group. But actually listened, taken seriously the issues raised and incorporated that thinking into your approach/work/product. So much easier said than done, but worth it if you do.

Really enjoyable meeting this morning with Donna Walsh of the European Federation of Neurological Associations collaborating in putting together some do's and don'ts of involvement of stakeholders and citizens in innovation design - article in development!

Number 1 'Don't' - if you want to include stakeholders don't get in touch at the last minute with a boiler plate email which makes it clear you don't know the organisation from Adam, and try to bullsh*t them with inclusion talk, when it's obvious your main goal is to have them promote your product - the design of which you haven't given any thought to whether the patients/users/customers wants it, needs it or how they will use it! Which happens all the time in so many areas! SO much money wasted.

For the top 5 reasons to involve citizens see my mini report from the trust project 'Nothing about us without us' - involving citizens in governance:
