The Importance of Humility

Trust thought for the day: The importance of humility.

This came about writing a presentation on our fetishising of machines as if they are somehow superior to humans and so emulating the predictability and reliability (haha) of a machine the aspiration of much of science and tech. As opposed to the inferior messy, emotional, irrational (the worse slur of all!) but actually far superior wonder that is actual people. It is bonkers!

I was minded of one of the people I most admire in the area of 'responsible innovation', who told me their biggest concern about achieving their social and ethical goals was 'the lack of humility of our scientists and experts.'

So I might add another signal of trustworthiness to the mix - humility. Tho pretty hard to know it even when you see it.

I found this homily on the interweb. I thought I agreed with it, but now I am not so sure. I think it might be thinking less of yourself and more of other people!
