If tech fails the marginalised it fails us all

Trust thought for today - design tech not from the perspective of the 'average user' but from the most marginalised and vulnerable.

Very interesting and important work here in Wired from ARTICLE 19 really shows the importance of deep thinking about impact in the pre-design phrase, and where a starting point of human rights, could be more useful than ethics as the framing for the impact assessment and stakeholder engagement. The 'Design from the margins' methodology looks very interesting.

Great work from Grindr, doing stealth mode and other tech design features to protect its users. Good article and report.

"It is no longer advisable to design technologies without designing directly for those who are most harmed. In fact, technology is better, safer, more innovative, more robust, and more integrative of privacy when those most marginalized are centered from the start of the development process. So the question isn’t can it be done, but rather why isn’t it being done?"

Perhaps of interest Reema Patel, just what we talked about in terms of stakeholder involvement by impact, no need for me to invent it, already done! You might like too Merve Hickok, Sam Brown, Tania Duarte, Mathew Mytka, Arnold Schrijver, Nathan (Nate) Kinch,
