Machine learning and patents

Trust thought for today - For me, AI is still just fancy software, invented by a person or company to do a job and to flog to another person for money. This attempt to make them special and different because of a software tweak called machine learning seems to be nonsense.

I await instruction as to why my simplistic view of AI is wrong!

"The patent system assumes that inventors are human. Inventions devised by machines require their own intellectual property law and an international treaty."

Is this realistic or just trying to put off the normal contraints they should have on them Vanja Skoric, Kate Jones, Susie Alegre, Gary Marchant, Joanna Bryson, Virginia Dignum, Merve Hickok?
