To earn trust companies need to provide evidence of trustworthiness
Trust thought for today - To earn trust, companies need to provide evidence of trustworthiness. Simples (but not really!) Here from FT about ESG not seemingly making much difference and companies getting hacked off that no-one still trusts them.
It is hard to do, to be fair. But more needs to be done to consider evidence of positive impact, not just evidence of compliance and boxes ticked. This might mean collective endeavours too, not just individual company promo, as impact happens often only at scale.
New standards for ESG welcome, but: "Executives who understand this still have time to get ahead of the coming disclosure changes, working with regulators to ensure tough new mandatory reporting requirements. But they should not get too lost in the accounting standards weeds.
A simple principle should guide their response to the ESG backlash: that the world needs to see evidence that their lavishly marketed efforts are having a material impact."
