Here are 5 interesting things we thought important distilled from a helicopter view of trust from various branches of psychology, sociology, behavioural science and Responsible Research and Innovation.

Included here are two new concepts:

  1. Trust not as an ‘equation’ - do x and y and trust comes out of the sausage machine - but as a messy, personal, and dynamic reflection of all our genetics, experiences, context and world view. Getting to grips with this granularity with empathy and curiosity sheds new light on trust relationships.

  2. Trust not as black and white, you trust or you don’t - but as a spectrum of feelings and beliefs, with corresponding actions and behaviours attached. Within this, trust is not necessarily a good thing (especially trust of the untrustworthy) and distrust not a bad thing (especially where it stimulates scrutiny and results in mores responsibility and accountability.
